Marin Wins State Award
On April 16, 2002 the California Integrated Waste Management Board awarded
the Marin County Hazardous and Solid Waste Joint Powers Authority (JPA) the
"2001 Trash Cutter Award". The Trash Cutter awards are designed to
recognize local jurisdictions for their outstanding efforts in recycling and
implementing integrated waste management programs.
The JPA is responsible for ensuring Marin's compliance with the California
Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989 which mandated every municipality in
the State reach recycling and waste diversion goals of 50% by the year 2000.
In Marin County, all of the Cities and County in cooperation with the
privately owned local waste haulers, joined together to create the JPA. As
a result of these efforts Marin diverted 63% of its waste from landfill
through recycling and source reduction activities. In so far surpassing the
50% State mandated recycling goal and out pacing the State in recycling.
It was for these reasons (public/private partnership, high recycling
results, and efficient cost-effective program implementation) the California
Integrated Waste Management Board selected the Marin County Hazardous and
Solid Waste Joint Powers Authority for the 2001 State Trash Cutter Award.
In her presentation, California Integrated Waste Management Board Chair
Linda Moulton-Patterson stated "The waste reduction success of the Marin
County JPA provides an excellent example for other jurisdictions to follow."
